The HopeXchange Medical Center is a modern, innovative facility designed to promote action towards catalyzing the rampant disease and ailments found in Sub-Saharan Africa. Both the completed facility and its equipment will adhere to current high quality standards, creating a regional center of excellence. It is built on a donated 6.15 acre parcel of land and is composed of a functional hospital and training/ research facility. It is structurally complete, and when fully operational will include:
The Medical Center will serve as the primary clinical and research site for The Health Project. It will be a regional hub for the delivery of specialized medical training and patient services. The three main elements to the Medical Center are the Clinical Units, The Institute for Medical Education and Clinical Training, and the Clinical and Translational Research Program. In responding to specific needs, the Medical Center’s Clinical Units target major burdens of disease in Sub-Saharan Africa such as infectious diseases (HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria), maternal-child health (prenatal screening, early child nutrition and immunizations), cancer (with a special focus on breast, cervical, and prostate cancers), ophthalmology (avoidable blindness, pediatric ophthalmology, vitreoretinal disease), craniofacial malformations (cleft lip and palate), and diseases of the endocrine and digestive system. The Institute will closely collaborate with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons, the two teaching hospitals in Ghana, and the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. It will generate continuing medical education through didactic and hands-on courses, along with recruiting and training African biomedical technicians to maintain and repair their equipment. Finally, the Research Program in collaboration with Yale University will support ongoing epidemic studies and engage in extensive public health surveillance projects. The HopeXchange Medical Center will have a significant and enduring impact on healthcare in Ghana through empowering Ghanaians themselves and working alongside existing healthcare facilities. |
