In January of this year, the Ghana Breast Cancer Alliance and the Breast Health Global Initiative, in collaboration with hopeXchange and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, sponsored their first Breast Cancer Specialty Training Course in Kumasi, Ghana. This is one facet of the extensive educational program planned to increase health care capacity and access to high quality specialized clinical care in Ghana.
The fruit of a synergy between local practitioners and various leading world specialists in breast cancer, this program enjoyed the participation of 160 medical professionals from across Ghana.
The first Breast Cancer Specialist Training Course succeeded in covering a wide area of topics. Utilizing a comprehensive educational approach, the curriculum employed diverse didactic sessions, interactive and panel discussions, and practical workshops. The course, moreover, ended with a two-day practicum, during which three international experts demonstrated various surgical techniques taught during the didactic sessions. These international surgeons included Prof. Riccardo Masetti, Director of the Breast Center at the Catholic University of Rome and Medical Director of HopeXchange, Prof. Dr. Benjamin O. Anderson, Director of the Breast Health Global Initiative, and Prof. Lisa A. Newman, Professor of Surgery and Director at the University of Michigan Breast Care Center.
The Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Quaye-Kumah, made a guest appearance and addressed the participants. He reiterated the full support that his government extends to hopeXchange as it collaborates with the Ministry of Health to positively impact the healthcare system in Ghana and in the Sub-Saharan region.
There was an excellent response from the participants. Both the local and international faculties are very pleased with the outcome, and preparations are underway for the second multidisciplinary teaching session in breast cancer to take place within a few months.
